The tournament is organised by the game’s developer, Epic Games. The event participation will be entirely merit-based and they don’t sell any franchises and teams.

2. The International

This is the annual world championship for DOTA 2, which is another one of the most popular games today. It is one of the biggest eSports events of the year and gets a large number of participants.

3. League of Legends World Championship

5. Capcom Cup

Capcom is a live esports tournament that has been happening since 2013. It is usually a 16-32 player tournament and the players need to win at smaller competitive events to qualify for the finals.

This is one of the most anticipated eSports events for the fans of online fighting games. The 2020 event is scheduled to be held on July 4th and 5th in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The smaller qualification games will start in March 2020 and will go on till June.


6. International eSports Federation World Championships

The International eSports Federation World Championships are held in a similar format as the Olympics, but for eSports. Unlike other tournaments, for this one, the teams represent their countries and compete in different games.

The federation was founded in 2008 and has been organising these tournaments for several years now. Vietnam, Taiwan, Germany, South Korea, and a few European countries regularly participate in these tournaments.

The event is usually hosted either in South Korea or Taiwan. The games played at this event may change from year to year.

The developers of the Rocket League game, Psyonix, host an annual world tournament for gamers from different countries around the world. Players must win the regional competition against players from other countries to qualify for the finals.

The finals are the only time that players compete in front of a live audience, the rest are played online.

10. The Intel Extreme Masters

The IEM is one of the longest-running series of international eSports tournaments that is sponsored by Intel. It includes several games like  Starcraft II, Quake Live, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, and Hearthstone.

Several qualification rounds are held in different countries but the final event usually takes place in Katowice. The 2020 tournaments will be held in February and March.


11. FIFA eWorld Cup

This is truly one of the biggest eSports events in terms of the number of participants, which could be in the millions. These people compete in several online matches to qualify for the final tournament.

The tournament will most likely be held in August 2020 but the final schedule is yet to be announced.


12. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Campionships

This is the biggest Counter-Strike tournament in the world and given the popularity of the game, one of the most anticipated eSports events as well. Known popularly as “Majors,” these are biannual tournaments hosted by the game’s developers, Valve Corporation.


13. Fortnite Secret Skirmish

These are short-duration events that are held before and lead up to the Fortnite World Cup. Although these are sort of qualification rounds for the final event, these also have prize money of around $500,000.

14. DreamHack

This is a Swedish eSports event and one of the most popular gaming conventions in the world. It is also the largest LAN gaming event in the world where several different games are played.

Similar to BlizzCon, this is also a gaming convention and not a tournament for any particular game.

15. StarCraft II World Championship

This is another popular eSports event hosted by Blizzard Entertainment for people who play StarCraft II. They host several such eSports events for several of their games and this is another popular one from the list.

16. The Hearthstone World Championship

18. Halo Championship Series

This is a professional Halo league that is sponsored by Microsoft and governed by Electronic Sports League. The prize pool for this tournament used to be $1 million, but was later increased to $2 million after they started crowdfunding it.

19. DOTA 2 Asia Championships

This is a regional event during which DOTA 2 players gather somewhere in Asia to compete for the trophy. Similar to other tournaments, there are qualifying rounds first and then selections are made for the final championship.
