First came SEO tools that assisted professionals and website owners in tasks like keyword research and site audits. Then came AI SEO tools that automated these SEO practices and more, including content generation and backlink analysis. Now, advancements are on the next rung of the SEO ladder, namely predictive SEO.
In simple words, we're now looking at the stage of SEO development, where it may be possible to anticipate search trends and audience behavior patterns before they materialize. That would likely give us the opportunity to adapt our strategies in time or even before a trend begins.
Now that over 44% of SEO tasks are being done using AI, it's not hard to imagine that AI would be put to good use to actually predict what comes next in this space. But is this even possible? If so, how do we start preparing for it? We've put together a helpful guide to answer these questions.
Predictive SEO Explained – The Competitive Edge for 2025
Many SEOs may be skeptical when they hear that SEO might be predictable. They are likely to think that, as a discipline, SEO is much too rooted in the behavior of search engines to be predictable. After using a reactive approach to SEO for over a decade, it's not surprising that a predictive model seems almost too good to be true.
However, some recent studies have proved that large language models (LLMs) can be used to forecast trends in many fields. A good example comes from a paper published prior to the US 2024 elections, which predicted the outcome of the election using data from 2020.
Would you want to predict the outcome of #SEO strategies before executing them?
Doing this would improve the effectiveness of driving goals like revenue growth, finding more profitable customers, or lowering CACs.

— Kevin Rowe (@_kevinrowe) November 14, 2024
The researchers fed their LLM data from the ANES 2020 survey, which included 6,571 responses. With just this meager (compared to a country of millions) sample size, the AI model was able to nail down the outcome with remarkable accuracy. In all three measurement methods, the model forecasted Donald Trump to win the election.
It further showed that the Republican party would get 300 of the 538 Electoral College votes, which is quite close to the 312 that they finally got.
This is just one example of how AI models can predict future outcomes to a significant extent. Like the elections, the same approach can also be replicated in SEO.
It would help SEOs transition from reactive to proactive SEO strategies. Instead of just reacting to algorithm changes, trending keywords, or seasonal shifts, predictive SEO uses data and AI to forecast what will matter to your audience before it even happens.
So, you're no longer playing a ''catch-up game.'' Rather, you're one step ahead of the competition and search engines.
Stay One Step Ahead: Proven Strategies to Predict SEO Trends
Predictive SEO may be a relatively new concept, but AI optimization has been around for some time. Many of the same strategies can be applied to predicting SEO trends by giving them an anticipatory and proactive approach. Here's how.
Using Historical Data for Trend Prediction
In the study we shared earlier, the researchers did exactly this: they used historical data to detect future trends. You can do the same in SEO, too.
Some things, such as user behaviors, are recurring in the online space. For example, every time the holiday season rolls around, eCommerce sites see a spike in traffic. An analysis of historical spike patterns using AI tools can help you predict when the traffic will start increasing this year and when you should start optimizing your website for it.
That's not to say some keywords and trends aren't evergreen. For example, ''weight loss'' is a forever-popular keyword that will always require optimization. However, the search volume for specific terms like ''new year weight loss challenge'' and ''new year weight loss plan'' increases between December and January.
With predictive SEO, you can see exactly when these long-tail keywords will start to gain popularity. You can then adjust your content calendar to include these topics and keywords.
Frameworks like time-series analysis or regression modeling come into play here. These help marketers identify not only when a trend is likely to resurface but also how it evolves. The more historical data you have, the more accurate your predictions can be. Based on these insights, you can then incorporate the right keywords and post the content at the right time for the best results.
AI and Machine Learning in Search Behavior Prediction
Thanks to AI, you can look beyond the surface-level information we previously had about user behavior. Machine learning tech analyzes vast amounts of data, like search queries, click patterns, and browsing habits, to spot trends and patterns that humans might miss. They don't just look at what's popular now; they predict what's next by recognizing shifts and patterns in user behavior and intent.
AI also excels at deciphering user intent. It categorizes searches into informational, transactional, or navigational intent, helping marketers understand why users search the way they do.
Take the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool as an example. For every keyword, it also shows you the AI-identified intent behind that term. Taking the same weight loss example forward, at a certain time during the year, the intent behind related keywords may be mainly informational or navigational.
However, as the end of the year arrives, the intent may change to transactional as people start to look for resources, meal plans, online equipment, guides, and weight loss medication that can help them accomplish their goals for the new year.
With AI-assisted intent identification, you can predict the motive behind future searches. In response, you can create similar content or run ads that align with that intent.
Personalized Content Through Predictive Insights
Getting a peek into the user's intent with predictive SEO tools gives businesses a clear picture of their target audience's needs and preferences. AI can help forecast the types of content most likely to capture attention and drive engagement. Applying these insights could lead to a significant boost in website traffic, higher click-through rates, or a noticeable uptick in conversions, all fueled by delivering content tailored to user expectations.
You can then create a highly relevant content experience for them throughout their journey. Google itself says that instead of focusing on writing for the search engines, you need to create people-first content. The same is evident on social media platforms, where users determine trends.
If a predictive SEO approach identifies the content users will engage with in the coming months, you can start creating it much earlier. For example, if there have been taxation changes during a year, most people wouldn't be searching for it at the moment. But they will as they head towards the tax season.
This isn't limited to the search engine. You can also use this approach on social media, where some built-in tools can also assist you in the process. For example, TikTok's Creator Search Insights shows you topics that people want to see or would want to see content about.
For example, if you're a tax software company and Creator Search Insights shows you that your audience is interested in learning about taxes for freelancers, you can create not only relevant videos but also blog posts for similar topics.
After all, your audience isn't only searching TikTok for tax-related content. They're also searching on Google. So, when you use these insights to personalize content delivery, you can expect better interaction from them.
General Competitive Intelligence Strategies
If you notice that a competitor is ramping up their paid ad spend and improving organic rankings for certain keywords, they’re signaling a concerted effort to dominate their online space. Semrush’s Organic Research helps you dig deeper into these trends. For example, you can identify keywords competitors have recently started targeting and determine if they align with emerging trends.
Rather than reacting to established patterns, you can use AI to find keywords competitors are investing in that aren’t yet seeing significant search volume. For example, if they’re publishing multiple articles on niche topics, it could indicate they anticipate a rise in interest based on trend analysis. You can then track these keywords over time to confirm whether their strategy is rooted in predictive insights and act accordingly to outpace them.
This way, you’re able to spot future opportunities before they fully materialize. Basically, when your competitors start betting on the next big thing, you get to position yourself to outmaneuver them.
You can use EyeOn to monitor your competitors' traffic channels and any new blog posts or social media content they may have published. If they’re publishing a series of new articles on niche topics, it’s often a signal of a calculated effort to dominate that space and direct traffic to their website. This isn’t random; it’s likely tied to their trend analysis and predictive SEO strategy.
With Semrush Organic Research, you can dive deeper into the specific keywords they’re targeting. Combine this with Google Trends to determine if these topics are on the rise. For example, if their content aligns with a subject that’s just beginning to gain traction, they may be using predictive insights to position themselves early.
This is your opportunity to go one step further. Identify the keywords and analyze their performance over time to preemptively create content that competes or fills any gaps they’ve missed. Plus, spotting which keywords they focus on and when can provide a picture of their strategic priorities, helping you make smarter, data-driven decisions.
In addition, use the Semrush Advertising Research tool to see the terms your competitors are bidding on. The tool also gives you search volume estimates for each keyword. If the volume for certain keywords is on the rise and your competitors are also running ads for them, it's highly likely these terms will be used by your audience right now and in the near future.
You can then add them to your organic or paid strategies. As you monitor competitors regularly, you'll get more and more insights into what they're doing and whether you should follow suit.
How to Forecast SEO Trends And Implement Predictive SEO
Going forward, if you want to rank high on Google, you'll have to sprinkle predictive SEO into your current strategy. Fortunately, Semrush facilitates this process in the following ways.
Step 1: Using Keyword Magic Tool to Discover Emerging Keywords
All keywords have an initial upward trend phase in which their search volume is increasing but hasn’t yet reached the peak. You need to identify these queries in this stage so that you can capitalize on them through tailored content before everyone else does.
The Semrush Keyword Magic Tool helps you find these keywords. To start, search for a broad term like ‘’AI tools.’’ This way, you’ll get clusters like ‘’free AI tools’’ and ‘’best AI tools.’’ You can view these clusters on the left-hand pane of the keyword results. Click on any of them and the tool will only show you the terms under this category.
Let’s say you want to focus on AI writing tools. Select the ‘’writing’’ cluster to see all keywords in it. Then, filter the results by increasing search volume. You can either select the volume range or click on the Volume row to arrange the keywords in an order of ascending or descending search volumes.
The keywords with a high volume already have too much competition and the ones with extremely low volumes might not be worth your time. Focus on keywords with moderate search volumes since they have enough interest to be worth targeting but aren’t yet oversaturated with competition.
In our example, ‘’AI tools for writing’’ and ‘’best free AI writing tools’’ are good prospects since they have a mid-level search volume. You can also look at queries by difficulty if you're competing with the big fish for a spot on the SERPs. For example, ‘’best AI tool for writing SEO rich blog content’’ has a low keyword difficulty of 35% but clearly shows an upward search trend compared to other terms.
So, you can start creating content around it. Since it has commercial intent, it’s also suitable for the consideration stage of your customer journey. You can even run ads on it since Semrush data shows that the keyword currently has a $0 CPC (little to no competition) but a relatively high search volume.
These insights not only help you identify emerging keywords but also the trends around them. You can then analyze them to decipher if your audience’s needs have shifted or new interests have arisen. This way, you’re well-prepared to match future audience behavior.
Also, since you act on keyword insights before these terms become overly competitive, you get that early-bird advantage. You also have more time to establish yourself in the new niche or interest that has come up. This helps keep your content relevant for now and the future, which is just what your audience needs to keep seeing you as a credible authority in your respective niche.
Step 2: Analyzing Keyword Overview for Forecasting SEO
After you've narrowed down a seed keyword in the Keyword Magic Tool, analyze it further in Keyword Overview. The first thing you need to look at is the Volume. If you've been keeping tabs on a certain keyword and you notice that its volume has been increasing exponentially, you can anticipate that it will see more growth in the near future. So, you need to up your content game around that keyword to capitalize on its rising popularity.
This tool also shows you the global volume for a keyword. Sometimes, trends are regional rather than global. For example, for the term ''influencer marketing agency,'' we noticed that its search volume has increased significantly in India. If we were an Indian influencer marketing agency, we'd amp up our organic and paid efforts.
An important section not to miss in this tool is where you see personalized insights for your website. They include:
- Topical Authority: How your website's authority stacks up against other domains.
- Potential Position: The highest position your website can reach for this keyword.
- Personal KD%: How difficult it will be for your website to rank for this keyword.
- Potential Traffic: How much traffic you can expect to drive to your website for this keyword.
- Potential Topic Traffic: The estimated monthly traffic for all keywords Semrush associates with this keyword.
These AI-powered metrics are important to account for because you don't have to follow every trending keyword. If a query has a super-high PKD% and your potential position for it is too low, you shouldn't waste your time and resources on it. Instead, focus on trending keywords that you have a chance to rank for.
While you're in the Bulk Keyword Analysis section, don't forget to look at the trend graph. This is where you get major predictive insights. If a keyword's trend is steadily increasing, it's a good indication that its search volume will continue to grow. So, you should incorporate it in your content strategy.
Next to it, you'll see Pot Traffic. This is a new Semrush metric that tells you how much traffic you can expect to get for this keyword based on your topical authority and competitiveness. From here, choose keywords that are in an upward trend and will potentially bring in good traffic.
Back on the main Keyword Overview page, you'll also see a Trend graph underneath the Intent and CPC section. This shows you the query's trend for the past 12 months.
In our case, we can see that the search for ''influencer marketing agency''' was high in November. A 12-month review shows us that it was quite high last year in December, too. This indicates that the same pattern will continue into December this year. So we can focus our efforts on this keyword and reap its positive results. This ties into the use of historical data to forecast trends that we explained earlier.
While you're at it, don't miss out on the Keyword Ad History section. Here, you can see the trend in paid campaigns for this keyword. The tool shows us that October is a prime month for websites to run paid campaigns around ''influencer marketing agency.''
In the full report, we can see which websites are running ads on this keyword and how much traffic they get. It also shows us if they ran a campaign on the same query last year. Even better, we can see the exact ad copies they use, which helps us see how to place the keywords. These insights make it easier to combine your organic and paid strategies in pre-emptive ways.
Step 3: Using Traffic Analytics to Track Historical Traffic Trends
The traffic patterns for a website, especially over time, also tell you a lot about what search trends may be catching on. Semrush's Traffic Analytics tool unearths this information for your and your competitors' websites.
You can use this tool to find seasonal trends. The ''Trend by Competitor'' graph is your best friend in this regard. In the date tab, open the drop-down menu and select ''last 1 year'' or ''last 6 months,'' whatever may be suitable.
In our example, we're looking at Gym Shark and Lulu Lemon to see the trend in workout and athleisure apparel. We can see that both websites have a spike in October 2024. This could mean that people are increasing their search for these company's products or general workout wear because:
- They want to buy these clothes for themselves during the end-of-year sales.
- They want to give these products as gifts.
- They plan to purchase athleisure apparel for their New Year's resolutions.
Or, it could be a combination of all these factors. Semrush also shows you the forecast for the site's traffic over the next month or so. In our case, the faint lines (indicating forecast) show that the traffic will stay the same or increase.
To further gauge the exact time of the year when traffic is high for these sites, we set the graph to ''last 6 months.'' It showed us that the traffic now is the highest it has been, which implies that it will likely continue to stay high. We can further see the graph for the past year to confirm this assumption.
By doing this, you can get a sense of which months or periods have the most traffic for a website. With this knowledge, it's easy to determine when you need to increase content creation or supplement your organic efforts with paid ones on the web and social media.
You can also go to the Top Pages tab to see which product pages your competitors actively promote and how much traffic they get. The trend graph further shows you the popularity of those pages or products over the last 12 months, giving you an idea of whether they will be trending soon.
Step 4: Using Position Tracking to Stay Ahead of Competitors
You can guess a certain keyword or cluster is trending when it goes up in rank. After all, the more people search for something, the more views it gets, and then ultimately improves that web page's standing in the SERPs.
The Semrush Position Tracking tool helps you keep an eye on these keyword movements not only on your site but on your competitors', too. This way, when you see a keyword gaining momentum in the SERPs, you can predict that it's worth optimizing your content for.
For example, when analyzing Healthline.com, we saw that the following keywords have had a positive impact recently:
- Types of headaches
- Sleep disorders
- Vitamin D benefits
- Sinus infection remedies
At the time of writing, winter is just around the corner in the Northern Hemisphere. It's no surprise that people are searching for information on how to prevent and treat common seasonal illnesses like headaches, sleep disorders, and sinus infections.
In the Overview tab, Semrush shows Potential Growth, which is an AI-based estimation of how much your website can grow if you focus on the top keywords suggested by the tool. It shows you the potential visibility of your website over the next three months based on how well you incorporate the keywords in your strategy.
Click the ''view top keywords'' button to see the keywords that you should be focusing on right now to see potential growth in the next few months. This level of forecasting saves you a lot of time that you'd otherwise have to spend on guesswork.
Besides your own website, you can also take the same approach on your closest competitor's domain to see which keywords are recommended for them. Combine them with your own list to create comprehensive content that Google would love to rank.
Step 5: Create Future-Proof Content Based on Predictive Insights
With all the insights you've gathered so far, you can fill your content calendar with ideas that will give you an edge over everyone else. That's what Flowrite, an AI-based startup, does. They only have a 1-person marketing team, which uses Semrush for keyword research and competitor analysis to focus on terms that will get them decent traffic.
The insights they gather from Semrush help them produce three blog posts per week. After streamlining their SEO efforts over a two-year period, they now get a million visitors per month organically.
You can do so, too, if you're strategic in choosing keywords that are relatively easy to rank for (based on PKD% and not just KD%) and are on an upward trend. For example, one of the keywords the Position Tracking tool suggested Healthline focus on is ''tips for healthy nails.'' We selected this keyword because Healthline has a low PKD% of 26% for this keyword.
Semrush's AI also forecasts that the site's potential visibility can increase by 0.055% by focusing on this keyword. We can also see that Healthline is currently in 15th position for this keyword. If they improve their content or update it, there's a chance it would jump to the first page, where its visibility would grow.
Keeping this in mind, one of the topics to add to their November content calendar is healthy nails. However, there's no need to randomly choose topics.
Use the Semrush Topic Research tool instead. It provides topic ideas based on what's currently hot on the SERPs. You can see the search volume for every topic, along with optimized headlines and questions people ask about it. With all this information, it's relatively easier to put together well-rounded content.
Turn the ‘’trending subtopics first’’ toggle on so that the tool shows you topic ideas that are hot at the moment on the top. This way, you can focus on them immediately.
The tool also shows you the top 10 related searches, which gives you more content ideas on the same topic. Again, you may filter them by ‘’trending’’ to find popular subtopics. Then, either include them in the same article or create sub-pages and link to them.
Step 6: Continuous Monitoring and Refinement
One of the main things you need to keep in mind about SEO is that you'll have to tweak your strategy continuously. Of course, data will guide these changes.
The good news about Semrush is that it updates daily. For all the tools we've mentioned above, you can set them to a daily, weekly, or monthly refresh. Pastreez, a local bakery in California, does this exceptionally well. They use the Position Tracking tool to get weekly reports on how their local keywords are ranking.
If they see a drop in rankings, they see which website has surpassed them. Then, they go to their domain to gauge what's different and implement the changes on their website. This way, even if they lose positions, they can regain them through continuous optimization.
In addition, you should also keep tabs on how keyword search volumes are changing and which terms seem to be gaining momentum. Look closely at related keywords and topics, too. If a new trend emerges, you want to be one of the first to include it in your content to maintain relevance.
As you make these changes, also monitor how your predictive SEO tactics are yielding results. Start by monitoring key performance indicators such as organic traffic, ranking positions, and user engagement for content created based on predictions. Semrush can keep track of all these metrics. Assess how these performance indicators stack against benchmark metrics to determine if they really are delivering positive outputs. If so, you can use these predictive strategies in the future, too.
Some tactics will inevitably do better than others. So, analyze which content or topics did comparatively well and search for the ‘’why.’’ Did you make them more intent-centric? Was the effect seasonal? Maybe, your content was more comprehensive than your competitors’. Whatever the case may be, learn from this approach and replicate it going forward.
It’s just as important to analyze content that didn’t perform as expected. Was the issue related to inaccurate predictions, such as misjudging audience demand, or execution challenges like insufficient keyword targeting or content depth? Pinpointing these gaps allows you to make targeted adjustments. These findings further help you refine your predictive SEO strategy by letting you identify the tactics, content type, platform, or topics that do well for your domain.
Turning Predictive SEO Challenges into Opportunities
As potential-filled as predictive SEO may be, it comes with challenges that SEOs yet have to master resolving. That's what happens every time a new technology enters the scene; it brings solutions and opportunities for growth, but it also requires adaptation and learning. That’s why it’s important to complement predictive SEO with enough flexibility for strategic adjustments.
Balancing Prediction with Flexibility
First off, relying on predictions always comes with a risk. Data can be flawed, and algorithms are notoriously unpredictable. While forecasting tools use historical data and patterns to predict trends, they can't always account for sudden shifts, like a surprise Google algorithm update or a global event that alters user behavior overnight.
For example, in November 2024, Google rolled out a core update after releasing one just a few months ago in March. So, if you had predicted a certain search pattern in Q1 and expected it to last till the end of the year, the new update might have thrown off your predictions and caused a drop in traffic and rankings.
Keeping this in mind, your content calendar shouldn't be set in stone. Instead, create a balance between performance reviews and predictive planning. Use predictive insights to draft your content calendar, but schedule periodic check-ins to evaluate how well your strategy aligns with actual trends. You can use Google Trends and Semrush for this.
If a lot of your traffic comes from social platforms, use social media listening tools to hear the current conversations in your niche. Whatever you find out can be used as input for your content optimization strategy.
Risks of Over-Optimization and Content Authenticity
Predictive SEO can surely guide many aspects of content creation. However, don't go toward over-optimization; that's a slippery slope. We've already mentioned that Google doesn't want you to write for the search engine but for the actual users. Yes, predictive or SEO forecasting tools can give you insights into which keywords to focus on and what kind of content to create.
However, you have to make that content sound authentic. Users expect value, not a string of buzzwords. Google also sees keyword stuffing as a policy-violating practice, which means your content could get penalized if you go down this route. Here, you need to perfect that balance between predictive SEO and content quality (and human-ness).
Here's how.
- Aim to provide value and meet search intent even if it means you won't be able to include a dozen or so keywords in your content. Even with fewer keywords, if your content genuinely addresses your audience's needs, it'll rank. In a battle for "helpful" vs. "optimized," you should always pick the former.
- Diversify your content formats so that it doesn't seem like you're pushing a certain type of content. Include FAQs, infographics, images, and videos in your content.
- Stick to your brand voice instead of chasing trends that have nothing to do with your niche. Your audience follows you for a reason; make sure they see it when they read your content.
You can definitely use AI content generators to save time. However, don't hand over your job to them. The human element will give your SEO copywriting the flair audiences seek.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does AI help in predictive SEO?
AI makes predictive SEO smarter and faster by analyzing tons of data, like search trends, user behavior, keyword usage, and content performance, to figure out what topics and keywords will be hot before they actually trend. It also helps you optimize content, suggesting tweaks based on future search patterns and user preferences.
Can predictive SEO help me anticipate algorithm changes?
Predictive SEO can give you a heads-up on algorithm changes, but it's not magic. AI tools analyze patterns from past updates and current trends to help you spot what Google might prioritize next—like user intent or page experience. You can then optimize content based on these insights.
How do I use predictive SEO for keyword research?
Use an AI-assisted platform like the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool to find keywords that are gaining traction before they peak. You can consider keyword trends and search volume growth to determine if a topic is worth pursuing. Similarly, the Semrush Position Tracking tool can show you how certain keywords are in an upward trend and then suggest related terms to use in your content for potential visibility and traffic growth.
Can predictive SEO improve my content strategy?
Upon identifying the topics and keywords that are currently or soon-to-be trending, you can plan your content strategy accordingly. For example, the Semrush Topic Research tool shows you trending subtopics to include in your existing or new content clusters. You can also use predictive SEO to find gaps in your current content and fill them in real time.
How does predictive SEO affect link-building strategies?
Predictive SEO only identifies emerging topics and trends. Then, you have to pivot your link-building efforts to include these topics and keywords in your content. For example, you can target high-authority sites that already cover similar subjects or are about to do so. This way, you're securing backlinks before the competition even notices the trend. It also helps you focus on building relationships with influencers or websites that are likely to see increased traffic.
How can I validate the accuracy of my predictive SEO models?
Predictive SEO models are not 100% accurate, so you should always keep room for flexibility. Validate the models' accuracy by stacking their predictions against what's actually happening. Compare predictions with real-world outcomes like rankings and traffic. If your model suggests a trend that takes off, it's a sign you're on the right track.
What steps should I take if predictive SEO insights don't align with actual trends?
If your predictive SEO insights aren't matching up with actual trends, don't panic; just adjust. First, check if the data feeding your model is up-to-date and accurate. Next, analyze why the trend didn't pan out. Did user behavior change, or did a new trend emerge unexpectedly? Use this information to then tweak your SEO strategy. You can also use social media and competitor insights to further confirm if these changes are the right ones to make.
How often should I update my predictive SEO models to ensure accuracy?
Three to six months is a good rule of thumb to update your predictive SEO models. This time frame allows for enough data to be collected and trends to emerge while preventing any outdated information from skewing your results.
What's the best way to forecast for voice search optimization specifically?
Focus on natural language and conversational keywords. Since voice searches are typically longer, long-tail keywords should be a priority. Use a tool like the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool or the Keyword Overview tool to find these keywords. Also, check the Question tab in both these tools to find common questions since these are also likely to be used in voice searches.
