1. As of July 2024, 5.17 billion people around the world were using social media.

6. On average, people use 6.7 social platforms per month. 

7. The main reason people use social media platforms is to stay in touch with friends and family, with over 49% saying this is why they're online. About 38% use social media to pass the time, and 34.3% to read news. One in five users follow celebrities and influencers on these platforms.

8. People don’t just spend more time on social media; they also use it more to interact with brands. Social media use went up by 43% to discover new products, 42% to learn about them, and 36% to buy products and services.

17. As of 2024, people spend an average of 143 minutes daily on social media. From 2012 to 2018, daily usage grew from 90 to 142 minutes. It held steady at 145 minutes from 2019 to 2021, rose to 147 minutes in 2022, and reached 151 minutes in 2023 before decreasing slightly this year.

18. Social media users have grown exponentially, from 25 million in the 2000s to over 5 billion in 2024. Early sites like Friendster and MySpace set the stage, with MySpace reaching one million monthly users in 2004. Facebook's launch that same year further boosted social media growth.

19. Social media users grew by 5.6% last year, with 266 million new users joining in 2023. This averages out to 8.4 new users per second.

20. Comparing social media use among US adults from May 2023 to January 2024, YouTube saw a rise from 68% to 71%, and TikTok grew from 34% to 37%. 52. According to data shared by Statista, Facebook had 2.1 billion active users as of Q4 2023. In other words, these users visit Facebook (or one of its other core products) at least once a day.

53. With regards to Facebook’s monthly active users, according to the Global Overview Report, it’s 3.05 billion.

54. India is the country with the most Facebook users. As of April 2024, the country had the biggest Facebook audience with 378.05 million users. The United States has the second biggest audience with 193.8 million Facebook users, followed by Indonesia with 119.05 million users.

55. While the US doesn’t have the biggest Facebook audience, it’s still the leading social media website by far in the United States. In March 2023, it accounted for about 45% of all social media site visits.

56. Over 10 million advertisers actively use Meta’s ad services for ads on Facebook.

57. Only 1.5% of the advertising audience uses their laptop or desktop computer to access the platform.

62. The brand with the most-followed Facebook page is Facebook itself with 188 million followers, while Cristiano Ronaldo is the most-followed Facebook person with 170 million followers. Netflix has consistently held the top spot for the most likes, comments, and shares on Facebook in the US for several years now.

63. Shakira is the musician with the most Facebook followers (with over 124 million). Rihanna is in second spot with 104 million followers and Eminem takes third place with 95 million followers.

65. X has 528.3 million monetizable monthly active users (mMAUs), which are accounts that log in monthly (not bots) and see ads.

66. X's US ad revenue is projected to be $1.10 billion in 2024, down from $1.13 billion in 2023 and significantly lower than $2.36 billion in 2022. This will represent just 1.6% of US social media ad spend, making X the only major platform expected to see a decline in ad revenue in 2024.

71. The most-liked tweet ever was posted in August 2020 to announce the death of Chadwick Boseman. To date, the tweet has received 6.7 million likes. The tweet with the second-most likes was posted by Elon Musk. The tweet that reads, “Next I’m buying Coca-Cola to put the cocaine back in,” was posted at the end of April 2022 and has received 4.5 million likes.

75. In 2024, global users spent around 29 hours per month on the YouTube mobile app. Users in Thailand spent about 49 hours monthly, while those in Switzerland spent under 10 hours. In the US, users averaged 26.21 hours per month on the app.

76. The average time spent per user via Android mobile app per month is 23.1 hours. In South Korea, it’s the highest—at 40 hours per user per month, while in Germany it’s the lowest at 10.8 hours.

77. Brand awareness of YouTube is estimated at 94% in the US, making YouTube the leading social networks ranked by brand awareness in the US in 2023.  Of the 94% who were familiar with YouTube, 67% indicated that they liked it.

78. The most watched video on YouTube is "Baby Shark Dance" by Pinkfong Kids’ Songs & Stories. As of January 2024, it has had 13.93 billion views. What’s more, it was the first YouTube video to exceed 10 billion views. It’s followed by “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi ft. Equally impressive is that when it premiered in August 2020, 1.54 million concurrent viewers tuned in to watch it, another new record for the biggest YouTube premiere. Since then, it has been watched over 1.8 billion times and received 37 million likes.

80. In 2024, the top global search queries on YouTube are BTS, pewdiepie, ASMR, Billie Eilish, and baby shark. The top five YouTube searches in the US are pewdiepie, ASMR, music, markiplier, and old town road.

81. According to Awesome Creator Academy, there are approximately 59,340 YouTube channels with over 1 million subscribers. 

82. In 2023, YouTube rated MrBeast as the #1 Top Creator in the US for the fourth year in a row. Across his channels, there are over 317 million subscribers. MrBeast's videos have nearly 60 billion views to date.

83. MrBeast is the most-subscribed YouTube channel. The American videographer and internet personality surpassed T-Series, the biggest music label and movie studio in India. To date, it has 274 million subscribers. YouTube Movies rounded the top three with 183 million subscribers.

To give you a better idea of its impressive growth rate, DataReportal reveals that the platform’s audience grew by 310 million users in Q1 of 2023.

97. As of January 2024, India is the country with the biggest Instagram audience size (362.9 million users). This followed a significant increase over the last year and is now noticeably higher than the audience size in the United States where 169.65 million users access the photo-sharing and editing app. Brazil is in the third spot with 134.6 million users.

98. The potential audience that marketers can reach with ads on Instagram is 1.63 billion. Instagram Stories ads can reach nearly 1 billion users each month and Instagram Reels ads can reach just shy of 800 million users each month.

99. Instagram ad revenue is projected to reach $71 billion by the end of 2024.

106. As of September 2024, Instagram itself is the user with the most Instagram followers (676 million followers). The top three people with the highest follower count on Instagram are Cristiano Ronaldo with 640 million followers, Lionel Messi with 504 million followers, and Selena Gomez with 424 million followers.

110. TikTok's ad revenue is expected to hit $17.2 billion in 2024. That's a 30.7% increase from last year. But, it's a slowdown from the 155% surge in 2022. Analysts predict that TikTok's ad revenue will grow to $22 billion by 2025.

111. As of July 2024, Indonesia had the biggest TikTok audience with about 157.6  million users. It was followed by the US with approximately 120.5 million and Brazil with 105.2 million users.

112. According to data shared by Business of Apps, TikTok was the top grossing app of 2023. It generated $2.7 billion in revenue.

113. The average number of hours per month that each TikTok user spends on the app via Android devices is about 23.5 hours. It’s the highest in Australia with an average of 29.6 hours.

116. It's estimated that over 100,000 influencers are on TikTok, with most having fewer than 10,000 followers. 66.96% of TikTok influencers had between 1,000 and 10,000 followers. Micro-influencers with between 10,000 and 50,000 followers accounted for 23.06%, while mid-tier influencers with 50,000 to 500,000 followers were at 9.04%.

119. In 2024, TikTok remains the most popular brand on TikTok with 81+ million followers. Real Madrid with 49+ million followers and ESPN with 47+ million followers came in second and third, respectively.
