Find Trending Keywords with Ease: A Step-by-Step Guide

Keywords have always been the life and blood of a successful SEO strategy. Now, they're even more important, considering their role in generative engine optimization (GEO), where long-tail keywords drive content selection by AI search engines. Speaking of AI, ever since its use in SEO, over 57% of marketers and SEO professionals have reported seeing an increase in competitiveness in search rankings in our AI SEO Benchmark Report.

Keeping this competitiveness in mind, it's more important than ever to equip yourself with the best strategies to find trending keywords that can help you break through this fierce competition. From tactics to tools, we discuss the ins and outs of finding keywords that will help you rank higher on Google.

Why Trending Keywords Matter for SEO Success

A quick look at the modern SEO landscape will make it clear to you that things change all the time. The same goes for keywords.

Trending keywords aren't just buzzwords; they reflect what people care about at a particular moment. When users search for trending topics, showing up in the results can drive significant traffic to your site, especially since trending keywords often have lower competition initially.

Beyond boosting traffic, they also enhance your SEO in the long run. Search engines like Google reward sites that respond to shifting interests by prioritizing fresh, relevant content. This can improve your visibility and domain authority over time.

When you shift your keyword strategy according to the changing patterns of search queries, you're basically catering to the user search intent. That's extremely important in both SEO and GEO today. In an X thread, Keval Shah, an SEO consultant, explains that searcher intent matters the most in keyword research because it reveals the reason someone is searching for a particular keyword.

When you fulfill the intent behind a keyword by providing valuable content, your site will likely be rewarded with higher rankings on search engines.

Plus, trending keywords allow you to tap into seasonal events, industry news, or viral topics. It could be a cultural phenomenon or an annual event; whatever it is, it gives you an edge over your competitors who are stuck in static strategies.

A good example of this comes from Lush Cosmetics, a beauty brand that's already quite popular but didn't have much site traffic from non-branded keywords before they started focusing on trending keywords.

Like most cosmetic brands, Lush also ran seasonal campaigns. So, they needed to find the most relevant keywords for their organic and paid campaigns during different seasons. Semrush's Keyword Magic Tool helped them find the most popular variations of broad search terms.

The brand used the search intent provided by the tool to optimize its content and advertising campaigns, which resulted in a significant increase in website traffic.

They also found less competitive long-tail keywords that they could use in their organic content. Such strategic trending keyword selection resulted in a 15% rich snippet growth with a 2,086% increase in review snippets.

The Ultimate Guide to Finding Trending Keywords

There are many ways to go about finding trending keywords. We start with the basics and go on to advanced keyword research below.

Step 1: Master Google Trends for Real-Time Insights

Good Trends is an excellent tool for finding trending keywords since the data comes right from the source, i.e., Google itself. If you want to learn about the tool from scratch, you can take Google's five-minute course on the Basics of Google Trends. Or, just go through the tool's usage with us below.

Basically, Google Trends works quite like the Google search engine itself. You search for a keyword and the tool lets you decide if you want more information about it as a topic, book, film, event, and so on. For example, if you search for ''Christmas,'' the term is not just a user query. It could also relate to a book, film, festival, or occasion. So you can find trends accordingly.

For this example, we went with ''AI tools,'' which Google Trends lets us search as a Topic or a Book. Since we wanted to look for trending keywords, we selected Topic.

Google Trends Search Bar

Google Trends Search Bar

The first thing Google Trends shows you is a graph indicating the interest over time in a topic. Where you see the peaks is where the topic was searched for most. Hover over the graph to see the numbers behind every peak.

Google Trends

The tool also shows you the interest in the keyword trend by subregion. If you're focused on a certain location, this will be of great help. You can further narrow your research by selecting a metro or city.

Filters in Google Trends

At the top, there are filters to define the location, time, category, and search type. Here are your options:

  • Location: Filter by country or select worldwide for a global trend analysis.
  • Search Type: The options are web, image, news, Google shopping, and YouTube search.
  • Timeframe: You can check the trend over the past hour, a few days, weeks, months, or all the way back from 2004.
  • Categories: Select the industry you want to check the trend in, from legal to retail and more.

For example, we filtered the results by trends over the past 5 years, and the graph only started going upward after 2022, which makes sense, considering AI tools are a relatively new concept and have gained popularity in recent years.

How to Find Keywords in Google Trends?

While the top sections show you the general interest in your query, there are two sections at the bottom where you can find keywords. The first is the Related Topics section, where Google Trends shows you topics relevant to your query. These topics can serve as semantic keywords for your seed query.

Related Topics in Google Trends

Related Topics in Google Trends

For example, in our case, Google Trends showed us a lot of AI tools as related topics. So, we can maybe create content around the top AI tools for certain use cases or industries.

The second section is Related Queries, where you find keywords similar to your main keyword. Google Trends shows you the percentage increase in the popularity of these queries in the timeframe you have selected above. You can either filter these keywords by Rising queries or Top queries.

Related Queries in Google Trends

Related Queries in Google Trends

As you can see, for our main keyword, similar queries like ''coding AI tools'' and ''free AI tools for teachers'' were highly popular at the time of this search. So, we can consider creating content around these topics.

Pro Tip:

Ian Nuttall, a digital marketer, recommends signing up for the Google Trends newsletter (US only). It comes daily and shows you new keyword trends. You can scour through it in less than two minutes and find great keywords to target.

Comparing Search Terms in Google Trends

In Google Trends, you can also compare keywords to see how they have performed against each other over a specific period. This is useful when you want to compare the popularity of different keywords and see which one has gained more traction.

For example, we compared ''AI tools'' with ''AI software'' and found that it's not as popular as the former, but it's still gaining interest over time. Based on this information, we can include ''AI software'' in our content but keep our main focus on ''AI tools''. This way, we can target both keywords and potentially attract a wider audience.

Step 2: Uncover Emerging Trends with Exploding Topics

Exploding Topics is another useful tool to find to-be-popular keywords before your competitors and capitalize on them in their early stages of emergence. It uses machine learning algorithms to identify keywords that are rapidly gaining interest but haven't reached their peak popularity yet.

Like Google Trends, you simply enter your seed keyword, and the tool shows you a list of related keywords that are currently exploding in popularity. You can also filter the results by category and timeframe.

Exploding Topics Keyword Graph

Place your cursor over any point in the line graph to see the keyword volume and growth in that timeframe. Exploding Topics also shows the categories in which the keyword falls so that you can adjust it in your pre-made topical clusters accordingly.

At the bottom, you'll see the Related Topics section, where you can see similar keywords that have recently been trending along with their percentage growth and keyword volume. Based on these insights, you may use all these keywords under the same cluster or create new ones.

Exploding Topics Related

The interesting thing about Exploding Topics is that it also forecasts trends into the future. You can get a future forecast on your selected terms for up to 12 months. That means you get a ton of time to create content around those trending keywords and be the first to rank for them when they peak in popularity.

Step 3: Advanced Keyword Research with SEMrush

Semrush, being an advanced keyword research tool, offers more insights into trending keywords than Exploding Topics or Google Trends. It shows you everything from keyword difficulty and regional search volume to CPC and ease of ranking. You can use this data not only to find trending keywords but also to determine if you should be creating content on them based on how easy or hard it would be for your website to rank for them.

The Semrush Keyword Magic Tool is where you'll start. Enter an industry-relevant keyword in the search box. Since Semrush updates its database daily, you always get fresh, trending keywords.

For example, we searched for ''social media marketing'' and also entered our domain to get personalized information. Here's what the tool shows:

  • Keywords: Along with their user intent, volume, keyword difficulty, and CPC.
  • Personalized Information: Keyword difficulty percentage specific to our website, i.e., how hard it would be for our website to rank for each keyword.

Semrush has a lot of filters to help you find the exact keywords to target. You can filter the keywords by questions to optimize your content for featured snippets and generative engines.

Questions in Keyword Magic Tool

Similarly, you may filter by intent if you're focusing on a specific product, service, or brand.

From the Keyword Magic Tool, you can go to the Keyword Overview tool, where you'll find more personalized information. The tool shows your domain's topical authority for the keyword along with your potential position on the SERP based on current competition and keyword difficulty.

You can also see the global popularity of the keyword here, which is especially helpful if you're creating content for a specific geographical location.

Keyword Overview Tool

At the bottom of the Keyword Overview page is a SERP analysis of the top 100 search results for the term. You may go through these links to see how your competitors have approached the content for the same keyword and gather ideas for your own content strategy.

Alternatively, you can use Semrush's Keyword Strategy Builder to develop a content strategy based on these keywords. The tool divides topics into clusters based on their user intent. This helps you use the main keyword along with its variations and semantic queries in the same content to increase its relevance and authoritativeness.

Finding Keyword Gap With Semrush

At times, your competitors may beat you to the punch by ranking for a specific keyword that you have not even targeted yet. You can use the Semrush Keyword Gap tool to find these trending keywords. It shows you the top opportunities for keywords you can target that your competitors have already included in their content strategy.

Keyword Gap Tool

For every keyword, the tool also shows you its intent and volume so that you can decide which of them to prioritize. Suppose you're only focusing on information-intent keywords because you don't have a tool or course to sell like your competitors. You can then pick informational-intent keywords from the list.

Leveraging Social Media and Online Communities for SEO

You don't only have to rely on keyword research tools to find trending keywords. Plenty of social media platforms and online communities can provide valuable insights into what people are talking about. Since these discussions are happening in real-time, you know the keywords are currently relevant and popular.

Step 4: Social Media as a Keyword Goldmine

Social media platforms like X, Instagram, and TikTok are hubs of trending topics and conversations. You should keep an eye on them to find what's hot in your niche.

Take X as an example. The Explore section shows you the trending hashtags, posts, and accounts specific to your location. It also categorizes posts by sports, entertainment, and businesses, helping you find ideas in select niches. From here, you can get a sense of which topics are hot at the moment. Then, you may put these topics in a keyword research tool to get more related keywords.

X Explore page

X Explore Page

Similarly, the Instagram Explore page displays popular photos and videos, allowing you to see what's currently trending in terms of content. You can also use the search bar to find accounts and hashtags related to your niche.

TikTok's Trending section is the most insightful of all. It covers trending hashtags, sounds, creators, and videos that users are currently engaging with. Use these hashtags as keywords or keyword variations in your content to increase its visibility. The tool lets you filter trending topics by your industry for more relevant results.

TikTok Trending Section

Don't sleep on TikTok trends. When certain trends become popular, people often go to Google to search for them, making them potential keywords with high search volumes.

Pro Tip:

Use social media listening tools to discover topics people are talking about in your particular field. These tools also show you conversations related to your business. Use the keywords from these customer conversations to create well-targeted content.

The Brand Monitoring tool in the Semrush App Center is an excellent tool for setting up detailed queries to track the mentions of your brand across social media. You can also track brand visibility by people, authors, keywords, and backlinks. The tool lets you set automatic email alerts for proactive action in case of a negative mention or review.

Step 5: Exploring Industry-Specific Forums and Q&A Sites

Besides social media platforms, forums and Q&A sites like Quora and Reddit are also repositories of trending keywords, especially in niche industries. Users often ask questions or seek advice on these platforms, and the most popular ones can give you a good indication of what people are currently interested in.

An X user and SEO specialist, KK, explains how he uses these sites for keyword research in a process he calls ''forum hijacking.'' He claims to have amassed 1,200,000 visits per month based on this strategy. Here's how to replicate his strategy using Semrush.

In the Organic Research tool, search for Quora, Reddit, or an industry forum of your choice. We'll use Reddit.com for this example.

In the Positions tab, filter the keywords by position by creating a custom range of 1 - 2.

Position Tab in Semrush

Then, in the keyword difficulty section, set the KD to 0 to 20. This will help you find keywords with low competition that are currently popular on Reddit.

Keyword Difficulty on Semrush

Keyword Difficulty on Semrush

Then, in the Advanced Filters section, change Containing to Word Matching. Semrush will show you an empty box to fill with your desired keyword. Here, type the keyword you want to get information on. Ideally, you should be specific with your keyword.

For example, instead of ''AI tools,'' we'll search for ''ChatGPT'' to get more specific keywords. Similarly, if you're in a product-based industry, instead of simply searching for ''handbag,'' you can add a brand name for more relevant results.

Advanced Filters on Semrush

When you apply these changes, you'll get a list of low-competition keywords that are currently popular on Reddit and related to your initial keyword. Depending on your website's topical authority or search engine ranking, you can increase the keyword difficulty to find more competitive keywords.

Now, you can use this method to find trending keywords in pretty much every industry forum. The alternative method is more manual. You'll have to go to the relevant thread on the forum, such as a subreddit, and then look for keywords and topics that are frequently mentioned.

For example, go to r/ChatGPT and filter the results by New or Rising. Then, go through the posts to see what people are talking about and what keywords they use.

Step 6: Tapping into YouTube Trends for Video SEO

Just like all other social media platforms, YouTube also has a trending section where you can see what videos are currently popular and gaining momentum. From this section, you can pick up ideas on what your next content piece should be about.

As we've mentioned in our YouTube statistics article, the social media platform is used by over 2.7 billion people every month. So, it is a hotbed for trends to form, making it a good place to go keyword-searching. Here are some ways to find trending keywords on YouTube.

Using the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool

One way to look for trending keywords on YouTube is through the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool. Run a keyword search as you normally would, and then in the Advanced Filters section, go to SERP features.

From there, check the boxes for Video, Featured Video, and Video Carousel. Since most videos Google shows in search results come from YouTube, these filters will help you find keywords for video SEO.

Alternatively, you can use the Keyword Analytics for YouTube app in the Semrush App Center to discover user trends on YouTube. The app shows you the fastest-growing keywords in different industries and countries. You can then use these keywords in your video SEO strategy to reach your target audience.

Also, check out our list of  YouTube SEO tools for similar platforms.

With YouTube's Autocomplete Feature

YouTube's own autocomplete feature is another simple and effective way to identify trending keywords. Simply start typing a keyword or phrase in the search bar, and YouTube will show you popular searches related to it.

If you want more information about these keywords, put them in the Keyword Magic Tool to find their related variations and user intent.

On Google Trends

Above, we mentioned that one of the filters in Google Trends is search type. Since YouTube is a Google-owned platform, Google Trends can also give you data about YouTube keywords.

Search for your keyword and then filter the results by YouTube Search. Google Trends will show you the interest in the keyword over time. If there's a spike in YouTube search for the keyword over the past few days, that could indicate a trending topic to create a video about.

You can also check the Related Queries section at the bottom to find similar keywords people are using in YouTube searches. For example, for our query (AI tools), we found that people were also searching for ''top 10 AI tools'' and ''AI tools for SEO'' on YouTube. We can use this information to create videos that cater to these specific interests.

Combining Trending Keywords with Long-Tail SEO for Sustainable Growth

One thing to keep in mind is not to get carried away by focusing solely on trending keywords. You have to move on from continually chasing the next big thing to achieve sustained growth on SERPs.

The best way to do that is to create a hybrid strategy that includes sustainable long-tail keywords and trending keywords. This way, you get an immediate traffic or impression boost on the SERPs, but you don't lose your rankings because people have moved on to the next trending topic.

Here are some ways to do this.

Identify Trends with Longevity Potential

Try to choose keywords that have the potential to stay relevant for a more extended period. For example, certain topics or events may have a short-term spike in interest, but they fade away quickly. In contrast, certain topics like technology advancements or seasonal events have ongoing relevance and can generate consistent traffic over time.

A good example is how the trends around "remote work tools" gained traction during the pandemic, but the topic remains relevant even today.

Similarly, let's say a certain product goes viral on TikTok. You can use Amazon keyword tools to find trending keywords to use in your Amazon product descriptions for the time being. However, you also need to have a long-term keyword strategy.

For that, you can sprinkle in long-tail keywords related to the product, such as "versatile home workout equipment" or "affordable home gym gear." These types of keywords will help you gain consistent traffic even when the TikTok trend fades away.

Use Topic Clusters

If you're specifically looking for trends in a certain niche, it's likely that you've already created some content around that niche. Integrate the trending keywords in the existing topic cluster so that even when the trend goes away, the content can benefit from the long-tail keywords that are part of the cluster.

For example, let's say your website focuses on healthy recipes. You notice a trend in the search term "gluten-free diet" with a significant spike in interest.

Instead of creating one-off content about this trend, use this keyword in your existing topic cluster around healthy diets. This way, your content will not only capitalize on the trend but also continue to drive traffic in the long run.

You can use the Semrush Keyword Strategy Builder to analyze up to 10,000 keywords and categorize them into pillar pages and subpages for a comprehensive coverage of the subject. You can either upload your own keyword list to the tool or import keywords from the Keyword Magic Tool or Keyword Overview tool.

Check our guide on ChatGPT sorting keywords to learn a simple way to create keyword clusters.

Refresh Your Content Regularly

Use keyword research and AI trend analysis tools to keep an eye on the timeline of a trend and update your content accordingly. As a trend starts to lose traction, you can adjust your keywords and refresh the content to maintain its relevance.

Pastreez, a bakery, used this approach to their advantage. They started their brand's website around September of 2017. Since it was in time for the holiday season, they focused on trending, seasonal keywords like "macaron gifts" and "buy macarons."

However, to keep their local SEO strong (which would eventually assist their sustainable growth), they also used "buy macarons near me" in their content.

In just six months, the bakery ranked in the first spot on Google for "macarons near me," with their non-branded search traffic bringing in the majority (85%) of the orders.

However, they knew they couldn't ride this high forever. So, being a new player in the market, they conducted competitor research to determine which keywords their top competitors were ranking for. They used the Semrush Keyword Overview tool to find the top-ranking pages for their main keywords. From there, they used Organic Research to find which other keywords their competitors ranked for.

Based on this data, they were able to create a long-tail keyword list that would complement their seasonal, trending keywords. As a result, they remained in the top 10 search results even four years after their initial success.

Keeping Your Content Fresh: Monitoring and Updating for New Trends

As one trend goes away, another one comes up. So, trend analysis for keyword research isn't a one-time thing. Instead, it's an ongoing process that you have to monitor using trend analysis tools that we've mentioned earlier.

You can use the Semrush Trends tool to keep your content fresh with new happenings in your niche or target market. The tool shows you new trends and insights from over 190 countries and regions, letting you refresh your content for a global audience. Its Market Explorer feature gives you an overview of growth trends that you can then use in your content to stay relevant.

The tool also includes the Semrush EyeOn feature, which automatically tracks all moves your competitors make, such as updating content or adding new content. If you notice your competitors taking a certain content angle or adding new information or news, you can then do the same on your website.

Semrush EyeOn

Semrush EyeOn

And while you're at it, you could use social media monitoring platforms to keep tabs on certain topics. These tools will send you alerts when your chosen keywords or hashtags are trending.

Once you find a new, relevant trend, it's time to get to work. Brainstorm content ideas and try to bring them to life as soon as possible so that you don't miss out on the opportunity. You can also use rank tracker tools to check if creating content around trending keywords has positively impacted your website's SEO.

The Semrush Position Tracking tool lets you measure the results of your SEO efforts by tracking the movement of your keywords across SERP positions. You can set up custom notifications to get an alert every time you lose or gain a position. It helps you stay proactive in making or reverting changes, based on whatever is happening with your keyword rankings.

Lead the Search With Trending Keywords

Ever since social media has peaked in popularity, trends have become somewhat of a currency. People search for trending topics, brands try to create trending content, and influencers want to be at the center of viral trends. However, you can only benefit from a trend if you use relevant keywords and are timely in content creation.

More importantly, your brand and existing content should be in line with the trend for it to be effective. With the tools and strategies we have mentioned in this guide, you'll be able to stay on top of trending keywords and use them to ace your rankings. Combine trending terms with their long-tail, sustainable counterparts to maintain your position on the SERPs for the long term.

How often should I update my keyword research?

You should update your keyword research every 3 to 6 months, but the exact frequency depends on your industry and goals. If you're in a fast-moving niche like tech, it's smart to review keywords monthly to stay relevant. Retail and local businesses should also refresh their keyword strategy seasonally. Also, revisit your strategy whenever there's a shift in search behavior, such as algorithm changes or new search engine features.
